Response her father’s death the town wouldn’t let her

Response to the story “A Rose for Emily” is how Miss Emily really died. The author wants to know who was the last person to talk to Miss Emily Grierson the night of her death. The whole town went to her funeral but no one has actually been in her house for at least ten years. Miss Emily is portrayed as a hardened, bitter old woman, and soon realizes she herself is a victim.

She has been oppressed her entire life by her father, unable to take a suitor and marry, which Emily desires the most. When hearing that Miss Emily’s father died, she said during those three days “he is not dead”.   It is the third person point of view because the town knows about Emily’s life, even though she was a secretive person. Emily didn’t know what to do with herself or live with the fact that her father has died.

Sheriffs had knocked on her door asking about taxes when she said: “I don’t have no taxes in Jefferson”. She always kept to herself, was not stable, and did not get married. When she was about to break free from her father’s death the town wouldn’t let her so instead the let her cousins go after her.   The next night four men crossed Miss Emily’s lawn and slunk around the house like burglars. They broke open the cellar door and sprinkled lime there, and in all the outbuildings. After a week or two, the smell went away.

Everyone started to feel really sorry for her. The day after Emily’s, the father has died the ladies prepared to call at the house and offer condolence. Emily was dressed like a normal person, with no grief on her face. She told the town that her father is not dead.  Emily was sick for a long time.

She carried her head high even when the town believed that she was fallen. Emily wanted more recognition of her dignity as the last person in the family. It’s like she wanted the touch of earthiness to reaffirm herself. Emily went to the drug store and asked the druggist “I want some poison”. She didn’t care what kind of poison it was, as long as it was the best.

Two days later we learned that Miss Emily has bought a complete outfit of men’s clothing, including a nightshirt.  Each year that has passed they sent her a tax notice, which would be returned by the post office within a week later unclaimed. The neighbors would see Miss Emily in one of her downstairs windows since she closed off the top part of her house.

Later on, Miss Emily Grierson has died. She fell ill in the house filled with dust and shadows.
