Pediatric not treated with antibiotics used for humans. On

Pediatric obesity, also known as childhood obesity, is a condition where a child is significantly overweight for his or her age and height. Childhood obesity affects many people in the US. Fast food restaurants, such as McDonalds, who are contributing to childhood obesity should find a way to make their meals healthier for children.  Obesity is when you have excess body fat. BMI, or Body Mass Index, is a tool used for measuring both, overweight and obesity. BMI percentile is preferred for measuring children and young adults (ages 2–20) because it takes into account that they are still growing, and growing at different rates depending on their age and sex.1 During obesity, people may experience overweight, binge eating, or shortness of breath. To treat obesity, you must go on a strict food diet and do physical exercise. Children with a BMI between the 85th percentile and 95th percentile is considered overweight. Children with a BMI above the 95th percentile is considered obese. Over time, consuming more energy from foods and beverages than the body uses for healthy functioning, growth, and physical activity, leads to extra weight gain.2 Fast food restaurants like McDonalds should find a way to make their meals healthier for children. In our society we should be looking for things to help prevent diseases and health problems like obesity. McDonalds is well known for their amazing food, although there are some things that they sell that are not healthy for children to eat every day. For example, the French Fries have 160mg of sodium and 230 calories. The Cheeseburger has 680mg of sodium, 300 calories and 40mg of cholesterol.3 In March 2015, McDonalds committed to use chickens that are not treated with antibiotics used for humans.  On August 31, 2014, a New York City Council member proposed a “Healthy Happy Meals” bill. Every parent knows the appeal that fast food restaurants have on their children, especially when there is a toy involved. The bill requires restaurants serving kids meals that come with a toy, to limit the total calories in the meal and the amount of fat, sodium, and sugar. They would also have to add more nutrition through fruit, vegetables or whole grains.4 According to a study at NYU Langone Medical Center, they found that kids meals at McDonalds were not healthy. The researchers came to the conclusion that the bill would make a difference in the battle against childhood obesity. Dr. Brian Elbel of NYU Langone Medical Center told CBS news that if the provisions of the bill were met, then it would save about 54 calories, which is almost a 10 percent reduction in calories. The specific limitations for meals that include toys at fast food restaurants would be 500 calories or less, fewer than 35% of calories from fat, fewer than 10% of calories from saturated fat, fewer than 10 % of calories from added sugars, fewer than 600mg of sodium, and one serving of fruit, vegetables, or whole grains.5  Childhood obesity is a serious concern nationwide. For more than 30 years, McDonald’s has included toys alongside children’s Happy Meals. And for more than 30 years, the rates of diabetes and obesity in children have steadily increased.6
