Jealousy of Others The story of two lovers in Cyprus, both deeply in love, turns into to a tragedy, but what is the cause of this tragedy? Is it the act of jealousy of someone else’s achievement or the manipulation that one character creates. The masking of it’s true intentions by deceiving, influencing, and creating lies. In the novel, Othello by William Shakespeare, Iago is a deceiving villain, who causes chaos, takes advantage of the characters weaknesses and uses it against them to get what he wants. Iago portrays himself as a honest and trustworthy man. As Iago toys with Cassio, exploits Rodrigo’s love of Desdemona, he manipulates Othello to believe that desdemona is sleeping with cassio.
Othello is blind to see that the rumor is not true, which lead him to take an action that he will forever regret. However Shakespeare portrays Iago as a treacherous villain who is jealous of others. Iago, is a man who mask himself to cover up his true intentions, as he uses the characters vulnerabilities to destroy their mentality. Cassio is one of the characters who is control by Iago’s treachery. Iago was consume of jealousy, as Cassio was chosen to be Othello’s lieutenant. Iago takes action, destroying Cassio’s reputation and honor. “I have a very poor and unhappy brains for drinking” Cassio explains to Iago(2.3.
34-35 ). Iago uses Cassio weakness of alcohol and creates a plan to sabotage him in front of Othello. So cassio can lose his position as the lieutenant. He then pressures Cassio to drink, hence Cassio is drunk and cannot control himself” but one cup; I’ll drink for you”, exclaims Iago(2.3.38-39).
Therefore, Iago backstabs Cassio and conves a fight between Montano and Cassio. As a result Othello sees this chaos, and demotes cassio from being his lieutenant, as Iago appears to be Cassio’s friend. Iago betrayed Cassio by earning his trust and honor, this shows that Iago is not afraid to get his hands dirty. Henceforth, Iago further plots his plan with Cassio.
He manipulates Cassio to believe that he can get his job back by talking to the Moor’s wife, Desdemona. In Cassio this may seem as great advice to get his job back, but his intention is to destroy Iago’s and Desdemona reputation. In effect, Iago will enact this desire to pull Othello into a jealousy state. Iago portrays a villain, that acts innocent and gains trust by others, but in the end will manipulate and deceive anyone he finds a weakness in. He uses Cassio by giving him advice that would help Iago manipulate the situation between Desdemona and Cassio. Secondly, Iago manipulates Roderigo, who is naive, has a gullible personality and is very persuasive. Iago discovers, Roderigo’s obsession with desdemona, Iago manipulates Roderigo. Iago sees Roderigo’s vulnerability and obsession towards desdemona, therefore Iago makes him think that he has an opportunity with desdemona.
With Roderigo’s obsession it causes him to believe anything that Iago says. Iago knows that Roderigo is played by his emotions so he tells him that Desdemona and the Moor are getting married. In return Roderigo believes that Othello is not a fit pair for Desdemona, “Call up her father” Iago pursues, so Roderigo wakes up Brabantio and tells him the news of his daughter(1.1.74). Iago manipulates Roderigo to give him jewels and gold so that he can give them to desdemona, Iago took his fortune, “Put money thy purse”, Iago explains(1.3.
386-287). He takes advantage of his fortune by using his weakness, which is Desdemona. Iago also convinces Roderigo to kill Cassio. Iago explains that this will make him win Desdemona’s heart. Roderigo believes that this will make Desdemona fall in love with him,”provoke him that he may’, persuades Iago to Roderigo(2.
1.295). In the end Iago kills Roderigo, “o murderous slave! O villain!” Iago screams(5.1.74). He does this to show that he had no interaction with Roderigo. Last but not least this shows how Iago uses Roderigo weakness and manipulates him to think desdemona will love him. Lastly, Iago intaginses Othello’s emotions, by manipulating him that Desdemona has an affair with Cassio is lieutenant.
The reason why he attacks othello because Iago angry towards Othello decisions about choosing the lieutenant “A fellow almost damn’d in a fair wife, that never set a squadron in the field, nor the division of a battle knows more than a spinster”, lago claims(1.1.22-25). Iago believes that Cassio is not right for that position, that he is. Othello was infatuated with his personal insecurities of being an outsider, so Iago took that advantage of evoking jealousy in Othello, ” O, beware, my lord, of jealousy!”, Iago explains(3.3.195). As Iago tears down Othello layer by layer by creating more lies about Desdemona and cassio affair, and being filled with jealousy”oh damn her, damn her!, yells Othello(3.
4.541-542) As he is filled with jealousy, he only believes in Iago, in this Iago becomes lieutenant. Othello does not believe his own wife anymore, calling her a whore and a sin. He believes that Desdemona is a sin, that should be murder, to be forgiven of her sins. In this he plans to kill desdemona in her sleep, but she plead for him not to kill her, but he is blind by jealousy. He explains to her it is the right way for her to stop her sin from growing. Othello kills Desdemona, but finds out that Iago is lying and been manipulating him. Iago uses the master plan to destroy every character with their own weakness,In return Othello gets his revenge by killing Iago.
Iago had every right of taking the blame for killing Desdemona by using manipulation and deceiving each character. In conclusion, Iago is the mastermind of deceiving and manipulating every character. Each action affected each character, by him using his schemes and using their weaknesses. The characters Roderigo, Cassio, Othello, all were persuaded to take actions that were not like them. Iago is the true villain of infatuating jealousy into all the characters, which causes the death of Desdemona.
