In today’s world, cell phones are an important part of people’s lives.  People make calls, text, take photos and surf the internet.  Cell phone usage continues to increase in the world. These devices are not only more useful but more dangerous, especially when used at the wrong times.  One of the most dangerous activities, is texting while driving. Hundreds of people die due to this, in today’s society. Drivers while texting and driving cause accidents   due to the distraction of texting and driving. Texting while driving causes auto accidents, distractions, and requires ways to prevent this from happening.   Texting while driving is a leading cause of auto accidents. As Martin Adolph said, there have been many studies that have linked texting and driving to be the cause of life-threatening accidents due to driver distraction (2010).  The Edgar Snyder & Associates said, that there are about 660,000 drivers using their phones while driving (2011). It creates injuries and deaths on the roads. People do not really know the kind of danger that they place themselves in when they decide to text and drive or they choose to ignore the warnings.The Highway Safety Association said, that text messaging increases the risk of a crash 23 times more likely. Dialing is 2.8 times more likely, talking or listening is 1.3 times more likely, and reaching for a phone is 1.4 times more likely to get in a car accident (2012). Another thing the Highway Safety Association said, was that 48% of kids age 12-17 have been in a car with a texting driver. Also 15% of young drivers have see their parents text and drive. Also 27% of adults have sent or received text messages while driving (2012).Parents like the idea of their teenager owning a cellphone because it makes it convenient and so they can check up on them quicker and easier. The DMV stated that more than 1,000 people are injured every day due to a distracted driver (2014). The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said, 3,477 people were killed and 391,000 were injured in vehicle crashes. As a result of texting, eleven teens die each day, it is the number one killer of teens in the society today. Drivers that are between 15 to 20 years of age, they cause 10% of all vehicle crashes (2015). When texting and driving, it is six times more likely to cause a crash than when drinking and driving. Texting is far more dangerous than any other thing related to a cell phone. The National Safety Council reports that cell phone use while driving leads to 1.6 million crashes each year (Edgar Snyder & Associates, 2011).  The teenager group is one of  the groups with the most car accidents. One out of four vehicle accidents is caused by texting and driving.  Another leading cause of auto accidents is caused by distractions.  The most alarming distraction is texting. More people die as a result of distracted driving than from gun violence. Addiction is not just drugs, alcohol, junk food or tobacco. Texting and driving is the new addiction. Distracted Driving is the activity that sidetracks attention from driving and reduces the driver’s reaction time in traffic and busy roads. Distracted driving involves a combination of visual, manual and cognitive forms.  This    affects what we see and how we respond and the time to process what is happening before we respond.  The things people do when they are driving are eating, talking to passengers, playing with the radio, and texting. Which texting problems is the biggest part of getting into car accidents. Taking the eyes off the road for 5 seconds to read a text, when driving at 55mph that is like driving on a football field with your eyes closed. Texting and reading texts takes your eyes off the road, which increases your risk of crashing. Driving requires your full attention. The statistics of distractions when texting and driving is that 16% of crashes are fatal. The number of injuries that happen is 20%. Also half of people answer their phones and 58% continue to drive when talking on the phone, and 14% read texts or emails when driving. One-fourth respond to at least one message every time they drive. When you are behind the wheel, it is important not to be distracted, you need to be aware of your actions and the actions of the other drivers.There are ways of preventing accidents while texting and driving. Some of the reasons you can prevent this is by putting the phone on silent while driving. Downloading the hands free app will help not to get tempted on grabbing the phone. Putting the phone out of reach in a bag, glove box, or trunk when driving is one reason to help out with less distractions. Also pull over and make the phone call or text. Having laws in each state that prevent people from texting and driving is a great way to keep the roads safe. Actions have been taken by many states banning the use of cellphones while driving which has served to take away from drivers the use of their phones as they drive. Some states are giving citations for texting while driving. Specific laws have been enacted to prevent and penalize the drivers who text and drive, but almost half of the drivers purposely ignore these rules and casually engage in this dangerous habit. Enacting laws to help prevent accidents while texting and driving are some of the ways to keep everyone safe. One of the most dangerous activities by people is texting while driving, it is a dangerous distraction and requires ideas to break people from this bad habit. Texting and driving is just as dangerous as drinking while driving. It is the leading cause of deaths in our country’s highways. The distractions causes injuries and can kill yourself, pedestrians, and other passengers. It is important to be alert at all times.  Lawmakers are working on having laws put into place to prevent the use of cellphones. Deciding to text and drive is a choice you make but you need to know the consequences of doing this action. Don’t be a statistic – don’t be a distracted driver.
