In many literary works including Shakespeare, the occurrence of blood signifies that either something bad is about to happen, or something bad has happened. In the play Macbeth by William Shakespeare, the appearance of blood symbolizes the occurrence of evil and guilt for the innocent die, and the sanity and morality of both Macbeth and Lady Macbeth diminish as they evolve through the play. Macbeth and Lady Macbeth, two of the main characters in the play, continue to develop themselves as they repeatedly shed blood. This symbolizes their guilt and evil desires. The sanity and morality of both Macbeth and Lady Macbeth are constantly deteriorating, as they continue to have innocent blood on their hands, even though they could have avoided the path of murder and bloodshed. In the first two Acts of the play, Macbeth and Lady Macbeth transition from good trustworthy characters to evil characters as they conspire to kill King Duncan and succeed with their plan. Prior to the event, Macbeth had begun to hallucinate a dagger; as he sees the dagger, he could only think about blood and he begins to go insane until he hears the sound of the bell, the signal to execute Duncan. Macbeth commits the evil deed and then guilt begins to flow excessively once he sees the colt of blood on his hand. This site brings so much guilt that he questions himself saying, ” will all great Neptune’s ocean wash this blood clean from my hand?” (2.2.78 – 79); because he thinks there isn’t enough water to cleanse his hands of Duncan’s blood. Therefore, leading to Macbeth becoming King and Lady Macbeth becoming Queen. However, one can see that both his sanity and morality is deteriorating.Due to the fulfilment of the witches prophecy, Macbeth becomes King but fear enters into his heart because he worries about his kingship; he fears that Banquo’s children, not his own, will become future kings. This fear suddenly becomes pure evil and hatred, as his morality dies and he plans the death of Banquo. He hires murderers to commit the deed, they were only able to kill Banquo, because Fleance uses the opportunity to escape. Macbeth receives word from the murders and is confronted by Banquo’s ghost at his banquet. The sight of Banquo’s ghost makes Macbeth to suddenly become defensive, as he begins to feel insecure: expressing his guilt. Macbeth’s sanity begins to deteriorate again as he speaks more of blood; after the sight of Banquo’s ghost, that Lady Macbeth drove all the guests away. This shows he is becoming worse, and even Lady Macbeth is noticing it.In the last two acts, Macbeth out of fear runs to the witches who warn him of Macduff. Macbeth returns to his evil ways and massacres the entire household of Macduff, except Macduff. With knowledge of all the evil committed by both Macbeth and herself, Lady Macbeth comes out with the truth in her sleep as she is overflowing of guilt. She questions if her hands will ever be clean, after being responsible for the death of many innocent lives. Lady Macbeth even states that she can still perceive the blood from her hands and exaggerates that ” the perfumes of Arabia” (5.5.54) will not be able to take the smell away. Her state of mind needed the help of the doctor, who claims “this disease is beyond my practice” (5.2.62). Hence, one can see that as she continues to think of the blood, the more she thinks of the actions that have diminished her morality. Her sanity is continually getting worse; as a result, she commits suicide. As reviewed through this essay, the sanity and morality of both Macbeth and Lady Macbeth is constantly deteriorating as they continued to shed blood for their personal purposes, even though they could have avoided that path which eventually leads to their deaths. Macbeth and Lady Macbeth are two of the main characters that continually develop themselves as they shed blood, symbolizing their guilt and evil. As compared to other literary works, the occurrence of blood signifies that either something bad is bound to happen or has already happened
