I believe GMOs pose little threat to consumers and have the best chance for feeding the growing population. Gmos have many benefits for crops, farmers, and consumers. GMOs are able to increase yield by 22%, and can be modified to eventually create products like gluten free wheat, which would allow celiac patients to eat wheat byproducts. There is a wide range of benefits ranging from less use of pesticide and fertilizers, to less use of land and water. GMOs are created to be resistant to pests, weeds, and crop diseases. This means that pesticides and herbicides do not affect the crops in the field, it only affects the insects and weeds.  GMOs help use less land by making more bushels per acre. That allows farmers to produce enough yield on existing farmland and not have to cultivate wildlands. Drought resistant crops are able to produce good yields in areas of drought. When it comes to health, genetic engineering has been able to make soybean varieties with healthier fatty-acids, and fewer saturated fatty acids than traditional soybean varieties. Other GM soybeans have increased levels of omega 3 fatty acids, which are good for heart health. Those who are against the use of GMOs make the argument that gmos create superweeds and superbugs. Ever since crops have become more resistant to weeds, weeds have become more resistant to chemicals sprayed to kill the weeds. Some farmers who are dealing with weeds that have become resistant to herbicides resorted to using herbicide ingredients like 2, 4-d.  Exposure to these pesticide ingredients are linked to many diseases, most being cancer. What is happening with weeds his happening with insects. Whenever pesticide is applied, some insects don’t die from the pesticide, creating more resistant bugs with every spray. To solve the problem, more pesticide must be applied or stronger pesticide must be applied. Eventually fields could be sprayed with pesticide and bugs would not be affected. This could lead to the destruction of many fields which could lead to decreased food supplies. Even though GMOs have the possibility of creating “super” weeds and bugs, there are many ways to avoid it from happening. The first way is to rotate different pesticides and herbicides. By rotating herbicides and pesticides, weeds and bugs are less likely to become immune and stronger doses are less likely to be needed. Another way to prevent immunity is to watch for certain weeds and bugs in fields and spray when weeds and bugs have little defence to protect from the spray. According to the National Academies of Science, GMO crops show no sustainable evidence that they are more dangerous than non-gmo crops. The conclusion was made after examine hundreds of papers on the topic and listening through hours of live testimonies. In conclusion, GMOs are not a threat to consumers and  make crops higher producing and better able to defend from weeds and pests. Further developed gmos can have endless possibilities to help society and should be furthered in development.
