I watched the movie ‘Pirates of Silicon Valley’ its a movie based on the rivalry between Steve Jobs and Bill Gates. Jobs, played by Noah Wyle and Gates played by Anthony Hall. The two stories are narrated by the co-founders of both companies, Steve Wozniak and Steve Ballmer.
We see Jobs break the fourth wall and talk straight to the camera about how important the computer revolution really was. As the shot goes back away from Jobs, we see him talking to Ridley Scott, who is currently shooting the legendary apple commercial from 1984. The movie shows these two start to ending, from the very beginning of their friendships to where it turns into their true partnership as business partners. The movie portrays them taking drugs, racing stolen heavy equipment, also while operating out of a garage.
We watch Jobs get hired back at Apple, which he later on gets fired from, and then the movie goes onto primarily Steve Jobs. I really did enjoy this movie, it was very accurate. Exploring the duo’s personalities, and adventures together. This movie included the side of the PC revolution on how Jobs and Gates didn’t actually invent much of the stuff they are known for. I found a quote, that really goes along with how i felt and what i thought about this movie, “This is as much a film about intellectual theft, and the grandiose egotism necessary to morally justify such actions, as it is about genius and inspiration and the world-changing technology they wrought.” (Matthew Rozsa) This movie did really well portraying the reality of it all, and doesn’t make either of these men, look neither good nor bad, yet it pays excellent tribute to both, showing their achievements in a good way. I really like how they showed the ups and downs, like Gates taking a ride on a tractor and Jobs taking LSD, but also brings it back into the professionalism we know both of these men for.
Portraying Gates as the ‘geek’ with little to no creativity, whilst bullying and thieving from other ‘big-brother’ companies and Jobs being the visionary, the creative genius, who changes the world but still gives all the money to Gates. However, no matter how well the actors portrayed their respective characters, I am not too pleased of how they wrote for Jobs. A self-centered, know it all attitude, that could be doing some rather unwell things instead of this. Berating his girlfriend when she tells him she’s pregnant, the way he treats his employees, shouting at them after 50 hours in the office. I have a high amount of respect for this film though, it was definitely something i could watch again. Overall 5 stars from me, and a must watch for others. I wish there was more Gates in this movie, rather than being mostly centered for Jobs.
The movie definitely shows its cheap quality, but it is still entertaining and still doesn’t stray fary from reality. It makes it easy to watch and learn about the history between these two men, personal computers, and showing the behind the scenes of how all these events ravel together and showing the people that made the future for PC’s possible.
