Iwould not consider myself very familiar with theater in general, considering Ihave no memory of even having been to any theater production. That is, with theexception of assisting a family friend with the drawing of stage curtains andguiding frightened five and six-year-olds around in the dark with a flashlight duringher school’s Christmas play, which is hardly a professional affair. Although Iam told by my parents that I went to a couple of theater productions, I musthave been too little to remember. They were also not quite professional, morelike family events such as watching a cousin of mine dance in her ballet school’sproduction.
Regardless, I assume that a professional theater production would requirelarge quantities of resources for the creation of backdrops, costumes, props, effects, and more. This also in addition to the costs involving the production’scast, both in the efforts of the cast’s individuals as well as training, choreographers, voice trainers, and even more, I would imagine. Theater variesin several ways from other written works such as novels, one being how theatershows the audience a scenario instead of letting a reader’s imagination picturescenarios, so in this area, theater’s range of scene sizes and varieties islimited by comparison to the human imagination. This, however, also makes iteasier for the audience to rather absorb the scenes in the specific way theyare being presented without having to exercise the imagination, leading toevery individual reading the novel having a different picture in their minds. Imay not have been to a professional production, but I have at least been insideof a few theaters that I can remember, so I have a good idea of what It is liketo be in the theater itself, but really no idea of what It would be like towatch the production itself. I feel like the experience of an audience member wouldnot be entirely dissimilar to the process of going to a cinema, except for theintermission.
Personally, I feel I would be attracted to trying to identifysome of the inner or hidden workings of the backstage process, such as watchingbackdrops and props being moved in between scenes and similar situations. I wouldalso be interested in listening to the musicians in the orchestra, as someonewith some musical background myself.
