Cement will remain the key material to moderninfrastructure industry and the criterion for the advancement of urbanizationin countries.
It is the basic and the predominate material for the building andcivil engineering construction. Cement industry is one of the most importantindustries in the world especially in Kurdistan region and is consideredstrategical and economical industry. Furthermore, for period of time thenational development was measured by production and consumption of cement.
Thecement is mostly found everywhere in every life and it is hard to imagine amodern society without it (Tourki, 2010). Kurdistan Region of Iraq is very richfor limestone, which it is the main source for cement production. There aresome cement plants in Kurdistan. However, still in Erbil there are not manycement production. In view of the need of Erbil province to the cementmaterial, especially as it is witnessing a large reconstruction movement.Developing new cement plant can provide Erbil province with the amount ofcement that it needs for reconstruction. Moreover, before starting any industryor factory there should be very detailed survey for that area which the sourcewill be taken from.
The selection of this area was based on geological datafrom the geological point of view and the analysis of several chemical modelsthat confirm the availability of limestone and its exposure in good quantitiesin Shiranish and Bekhme formation. The raw materials are usually quarried fromlocal rocks which are found in some places have already practically the desiredcomposition and in other places require addition of the clay and limestone, aswell as iron ore. The principal raw materials used in cement manufactures arealmost supplied from adjacent quarries in order to avoid the high costs oftransporting large tonnages of low cost raw materials. Cement quality istypically assessed by its compressive strength development in mortar andconcrete. The basis for this property is a well burned clinker with consistentchemical composition and free lime.
To ensure a constant quality of the productand maintain a stable and continuous operation of the kiln, the attention mustbe paid to storage and homogenization of raw materials and kiln feed (Aldieband Ibrahim, 2010)
