AwarenessResearch many communities because it is the second cause

AwarenessResearch question/statement:The topic of study being researched is teen suicide in high school. The information collected should help prove that high school has a significant impact on teen suicide. The first source is “Teen suicide is preventable” from the American Psychological Association. The article starts off by stating that teen suicide is a growing health problem and it is the third-leading cause of death for teens ages of 15-24. According to experts Michelle Moskos, Jennifer Achilles, and Doug Gray, causes of suicide can be caused by psychological, environmental and social factors such as high school. Mental illness is the leading risk factor for suicide. Suicide vary with age, gender, ethnic group and stressful life events like loss of friend or love ones. This source supports the hypothesis that high school has a direct effect on teen suicide and that there are warning signs that can help prevent teen suicide. Teen suicide should not be taken lightly because it is a rising issue that might continuing to grow. The next source is “Suicidal Teens” from the Child Trends organization. The article starts off by stated that teen suicide attempt have increased from 14 to 18 percent from 2009 to 2015. But it also is lower by 15 percent since 1991 which was 29 percent. It is pretty good because it has decreased by 15 percent by also has started to increase which can be a warning sign for all schools and countries. They also stated that this is a serious problem in many communities because it is the second cause of death from the ages of 15-19 in 2014. It also talks about how people who had experienced a stressful event or has poor level of communication with their parents are more likely to commit suicide The next source is “Teen Suicide is a Major Health Problem” and it states that youth suicide is a major public problem, in each year there are over one thousand death due to teen suicide and it is getting worse. It is one of the major objectives to reduce adolescent suicide by the US Department of Health and Human Services. They have claimed that suicide isn’t that common with teens aged 10-14 but after the age of 14 there is a huge increase of attempted suicide. This can be caused by high school stress or development of the brain. This further proves the hypothesis that teens suicide and high school do in fact have a link. The two unmet needs from the Maslow Hierarchy of Needs are the lack of esteem needs and belongingness and love needs. These two needs are very important especially to prevent suicide and in life in general.AnalysisThere are many of reasons why suicide in high school is significantly increased but there are four main factors that give a general sense on why they commit suicide. The first factor is the standards that are being made in highschool from the internet or even in person. For example, if you don’t have the “fashion standard” or the “norm” you will be bullied for having off brand clothing which can separate the victim from having friends or even having a social life. Another factor is losing a person that was close to them. For example, they could have lost a family member to cancer and they tried to suppress their feelings and not bothering to get help to cope with it. He/she can suppress it for a while but everyone has their breaking point and once that breaking point has been reached, it can cause a person to have a mental breakdowns or even lead them to suicide. Another reason why teens commit suicide is loneliness. If they lack social interaction, they will feel isolated and different. Which can cause some mix feelings that there is something wrong with them which can lead them to social isolation which is a state of “complete or near-complete lack of contact between an individual and society”. Which can lead them to a conclusion of no option but suicide. The last big factor is the pressure of succeeding from your parents. If you fail to get into your parents dream school it can cause seperation or even isolation from your parents because you in there mind lack dedication and focus and all you are is a disappointment. Teens wouldn’t be able to turn to anyone because its your parents and all they view you as is a mistake. Bible scripture reveals how important it is to assist people when they are suffering or when they need our help no matter what. One scripture that has a message of helping the suffering or the vulnerable is:Then the king will say to those on his right, ‘come, you who are blessed by my father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me.’ (Matthew 25:34-37)This passage is trying to send a message of helping the ones in need, the ones that really need to turn to someone when they have no one and you shall be rewarded for it from god. We can connect this to our daily lives by helping those that show signs of loneliness and isolation before it is too late. The Catechism of the Catholic Church states that we must help those in need out of the goodness in our hearts. “Respect for the human person proceeds by way of respect for the principle that “everyone should look upon his neighbor (without any exception) as ‘another self,’ above all bearing in mind his life and the means necessary for living it with dignity.”37 No legislation could by itself do away with the fears, prejudices, and attitudes of pride and selfishness which obstruct the establishment of truly fraternal societies. Such behavior will cease only through the charity that finds in every man a “neighbor,” a brother.” (Catholic Church)This passage sends a message that we help our “neighbour” just like if he was our brother. Our neighbour in this case are the people who are thinking about suicide and we have to try to stop them from committing a sin.ActionThe Society for the Prevention of Teen Suicide is a organization which focuses on suicide especially on teen suicide. We can partner with the Society for the Prevention of Teen Suicide because they are specialized in this topic. They have multiple programs/events to help struggling teens from doing a horrible mistake. The Society for the Prevention of Teen Suicide also follow our catholic social teaching; call to family, community and participation and option for the poor and vulnerable by giving teens an option and by allowing they to be apart of our community. Step one of my action plan is to get a guest speaker and consistently make announcements on the organization to help spread the word. The guest speaker will educate those on how teen suicide is serious and not something to joke about and also help those in need and also people who have been affected by teen suicide to help volunteer or be apart of the program which will help it grow. Step two is our funding and resources, we wouldn’t need much funding since it is a non-for-profit organization and we can get student volunteers since they need hours to graduate and also the organization can benefit from it since they get more volunteer and getting their mission and message out. We can also get mission collections for the organization if needed since we already collect every friday and maybe even civic day where we dress up in all in yellow since it is the universal color for suicide just like pink for cancer and donate 2 dollars towards the organization to help develop more programs/events. The third step is to have a big assembly on how the school did like maybe have the photography class make a slideshow/montage of people dressed in yellow, the events and the guest speaker presenting. The student involved in my action plan who volunteered would benefit from this as well, they would learned some catholic social teaching and start developing Beatitude behaviors. These Beatitudes would be: Blessed are they who mourn, for they shall be comforted and Blessed are they who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.
