New technologies are now being invented to notonly treat but to actually cure the disease. One in particular is gene therapy.  This phenomenon has been around for manyyears but in recent years it has been talked about more. Gene therapy has manybenefits for a person being treated with this method such as they could becured.

However, they’re many controversies of this method too that I will betalking about in this paper. Genetherapy is the process of inserting genes into an individual’s cells andtissues to treat a disease/ heredity disease. This is done by, replacing adefective mutant allele with a functional allele that inactivates the gene thatis not working properly.

Although gene therapy is still a working progress, ithas been successful in most studies. A carrier or vector is used to deliver thegene to the target cell (Thomas et al, 2003). The (Thomas et al, 2003). Theyinject the altered virus and once they reach the target tissue or cell, theyinfect it. All gene therapy on humans is administered on somatic cells. Insomatic cells there are two categories that gene therapy can be split into: exvivo (exterior of the cells) and vivo (inside the cell) (Thomas et al, 2003).

 Genetherapy can be the new medicine for disease. In study done by (Daya and Berns,2008) they were able to treat haemophila B using rAAV. rAAV is virus that hasthe ability to infect both nondividing and dividing cells. Their result showedthat with this virus they were able to cure haemophila B. Another study done by(Garber, 2006), were able to treat certain cancers using conditionally replicatingoncolytic viruses.

By changing the genetic makeup of a human being, there willbe a change in possibility their offspring will carry the disease too. Onthe other hand, there are some cons to gene therapy that need to be considered.One is the ethical approach (Anderson, 1985). Many people who are religious mightnot agree with changing ones genetic makeup to cure a disease (Anderson, 1985).

They believe that it’ “playing god” and that it shouldn’t be tampered with.Another negative to gene therapy, is it may develop a new disease, when genesare being changed something unexpected could happen that can create a whole newdisease because when one messes with genes a mutation can occur at any moment(Anderson, 1985).  Inconclusion, gene therapy could be the new method on curing diseases.  By changing the genetic makeup of a person,and removing or deleting the gene that is not working a person can be cured. Onthe downside there are some cons that can make a person think twice before committingthemselves to the procedure, such as the ethical view and the chance ifcreating a new whole new disease will the healthy genes are being inserted.
